The Power of Peace Network
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

The new and emerging technologies of information and communication are shaping the 21st century. We have unprecedented opportunity to learn together and in so doing better understand who we are in our diverse world. The better we know each other and share our diverse cultural realities, the less likely we are to go to war.

Mutual understanding comes from exploring and doing things together. Collaboration is the way ahead. Young people in particular understand this. They are learning and creating within the formal halls of learning, as well as on Facebook, YouTube and other up-and-coming outlets. Given this new environment, how might we best take our young people by the hand so they can lead us into the future?

The University of Waterloo and UNESCO are launching a Wiki-style learning innovation that combines the resources of multiple universities around the world with local stories told by young talent from many regions and cultures of the world. A media and ICT platform called The Power of Peace Education Network (PPN) is the backbone of this multi-partner venture.

Hello,

I just wanted to introduce myself and speak a little bit about how I am and what I am doing.

I am a recently graduate from the University of Waterloo. I majored in Psychology with an Option in International Studies. Through my working career I have focused on issues of youth and community development. To illustrate my experience, please consider the following:

- I have worked at Youth Shelter where I acted as a support worker for youth that are currently homeless. As a support worker I worked with adoelscents that needed special attention.

- I have worked at an Adolescent Treatment Centre. Within a rural farm setting, I worked with adolescents with severe behavioural and emotional illness. I acted as support worker by directly interacting with the youth on a day-to-day business.

- I am currently working at an organization called Pathways to Education. 'Pathways', as its commonly known, serves particular communities that consist of a vulnerable population. The community that I work within consists of immigrants to Canada, refugees and new Canadians. Within this community, there is a high drop rate for high schools students. 'Pathways' works directly with the youth that it represents and facilitates various learning alternatives and supports in order that the youth finish high school and are able to persue healthy career options.

- Through my university career I have participated in various ways within the university campus, as well as, in the larger community of Waterloo Region. Some examples, are as follows:

* Co-founder of the Mayor's Student Advisory Committee
* founder of 'Out in the Cold' philanthropic event which raises funds for homeless support services in the Waterloo Region
* co-founder of the 'VOC', a student club on campus that promotes volunteerism through events and volunteer opportunities.
* founder of 'Peace Day at UW' a yearly awareness event to mark the occasion when the United Nations declared September 21st the International Day of Peace
* Student leader for 'The Power of Peace Network'. PPN, for short, an a new company that is working with the University of Waterloo and Conrad Grebel College to develop an international broadcasting network consisting of various information communication technologies such as television, radio, internet, and mobile communications. The main broadcasting material will be related to issues of culture and peace. As a student leader, I work within the campus to raise attention to the developing network and making sure that students voices are heard and appreciated by the senior administrators of the company.

If you are interested in any of the above information, please don't hesitate to contact myself to find out more. I accept comments, questions, criticisms, concerns, praise, and any other form of communication.

I am also very interested to hear about what you do and why you do it.
